The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape (15% natural alcohol) is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre and Cinsault. Soft, fleshy, and opulent, with a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of kirsch, black currants, and licorice, this full-bodied, spicy, pure, rich, moderately tannic effort should be at its finest between 2006-2016. By the way, visits to this estate are well worth the trip if only to purchase wine, and visitors should be sure to ask to taste the rarest wine made by Janasse, a late harvest sweet cuvee of botrytised Clairette and Roussanne called Les Raisins Perdu. It is an impeccably well-made, intriguing offering, but there is very little produced, and it is only sold at the winery.
